Apple Vision Pro to Support PlayStation VR2 Controllers in Collaboration With Sony
Apple is reportedly working with Sony to introduce PlayStation VR2 Sense controller support for its Vision Pro mixed-reality headset. This development is expected to significantly enhance the Vision Pro’s gaming capabilities while also expanding its use for productivity and media applications.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple initiated discussions with Sony earlier this year to integrate the advanced VR controllers into its VisionOS platform. While the Vision Pro already supports PlayStation 5 and Xbox controllers, the PlayStation VR2 controllers offer superior precision and six degrees of freedom (6DOF)—essential for immersive virtual reality experiences. This addition will cater to VR gaming enthusiasts who require precise control for complex interactions within games.
The partnership was initially planned to roll out weeks ago but was reportedly delayed. Apple and Sony are now working to finalize the integration, allowing the PlayStation VR2 controllers to be compatible with Vision Pro apps, including gaming titles and creative tools like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Photoshop. Users will be able to purchase these controllers through Apple’s online store and retail outlets.
Gurman also highlighted Apple’s long-term efforts to enhance the Vision Pro’s input options. While the tech giant has prototyped a “wand”-like tool for precise tasks—similar to the Apple Pencil—the collaboration with Sony focuses on improving the Vision Pro’s gaming experience.
The Vision Pro, unveiled at WWDC 2023, is Apple’s first mixed-reality headset and supports augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Priced at $3,499 (approx. ₹2,90,000), the device features Apple’s M2 processor, an R1 chip for real-time performance, and is available in storage configurations of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.
The move to include advanced third-party controllers underlines Apple’s efforts to position the Vision Pro as a versatile device for both entertainment and productivity, appealing to gamers and creative professionals alike.
